Sadio Mane and Gini Wijnaldum are “nailed on” to return Liverpool’s starting lineup for the Champions League clash with RB Salzburg in midweek, according to James Pearce.

Both players were absent from Jurgen Klopp’s XI for the 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday, with Wijnaldum missing the match day squad entirely due to a minor knock.

But Pearce claims that both will feature in Austria, provided the Dutchman recovers from his complaint.

Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic, he said: “There will be more rotation for sure.

“Wijnaldum and Mané nailed on to come back in (as long as Gini recovers from his minor knock).”

OPINION

This probably goes without saying from Pearce, truth be told, but it will no doubt be welcome news for Liverpool fans nonetheless. Klopp has put heavy emphasis on rotation in recent matches, but such is the strength and depth of his side, they have managed to keep on winning without ever breaking stride. Mane in particular is such an asset for this team, and having him in the side in midweek will be a massive boost. The Senegalese intentional has averaged 2.2 shots on goal, two key passes, and 1.9 successful dribbles in all competitions, as per Whoscored, and it’s obvious that injecting that kind of quality back into a side is always going to be a massive advantage. Hopefully Mane will be fresher than ever, and he can be even more impactful than usual.
