Former England international Paul Robinson has come out with a big claim: that midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is Liverpool’s best player.

The Reds have a coterie of world class operators to choose from, such as Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. However, Sky Sports pundit Robinson has eschewed them all for the 26-year-old.

“Phwoar, it’s a tough one. The run that they’re on, they’re sweeping all and sundry aside,” he said, when asked by Football Insider to name Jurgen Klopp’s best player. “You could literally go through the whole team; Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, [Andrew] Robertson – the two full-backs are the best fullbacks in the league – the front three, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who I rate very highly.

“There’s a number of contenders for best player. I’m going to say Oxlade-Chamberlain, simply because I like the fact that he’s been able to force his way into such a successful winning team already and have an impact. For me, he’s been their best player.”

OPINION

First of all let’s take a moment to appreciate the fact that former England number one Paul Robinson appears to talk like he’s a Chitty Chitty Bang Bang character. Right, now that that’s done, let’s discuss the madness of his claim. No-one is saying that Oxlade-Chamberlain isn’t a good player. In fact, he’s exceptional. However, to say that he is the best player in this Liverpool team is tantamount to heresy. He’s come back from injury very well and has added another element to an already excellent Reds side. Having said that, he’s not the best Liverpool player – he’s just not. Van Dijk is the obvious choice, and is clearly the best in the world at his position. Then there’s Mane, who has arguably been the finest player in the Premier League thus far this season. You could also say Alisson, who is arguably the best goalkeeper on the planet, or Salah, who is one of the most devastating goalscorers around. So, while ‘The Ox’ is a world class player who has made a tremendous comeback from injury, Robinson is a tad off with this particular shout.
