Danny Gabbidon has questioned how Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk didn’t get sent off against Everton in their 5-2 victory on Wednesday.

The retired defender admitted he was baffled with how the Dutch international didn’t give away a penalty for his altercation with Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the first half which forced the Toffees’ forward to miss the target when through on goal at Anfield.

Gabbidon questioned the level of defending on show in the Merseyside derby on his personal Twitter account, claiming Everton’s defence was only a little bit worse than the Reds after the game.

“With the way that Everton defended (slightly worse than Liverpool) they were never gonna get a result out of that game but I’m still baffled how that pen and a possible red card isn’t given on Van Dijk,” the BBC pundit wrote on Wednesday evening.

OPINION

It was pretty clear that Liverpool’s defence was not up to scratch against Everton on Wednesday, and despite only conceding twice – they were nowhere near good enough. The Toffees had way too many openings at Anfield, and if they were more clinical in the final third, the scoreline could have been a lot closer in the all-important clash. Jurgen Klopp will only care about the three points, but he knows that there are certain areas that need to improve drastically before they start getting carried away. As for the incident, it was a call that could have gone either way. Van Dijk certainly didn’t play the ball, and Calvert-Lewin was past him before making contact – the argument comes on whether or not the Reds’ colossus did enough to put the Everton forward on the ground or it was just his momentum. Gabbidon certainly believed he thought it was more than enough to justify a red card and more importantly a penalty at a time where the game could have been thrown into the balance.
