OPINION

If you’re going to drop a bit of a shocker, maybe don’t do so after you’ve just put pen to paper on a new deal to keep you at a club until 2022. But that’s exactly what James Milner did against Watford on Saturday lunchtime. The veteran ace was confirmed as having signed a new deal with Liverpool on Friday, but then put in the sort of display that he would be wanting to forget sooner rather than later. The Reds took a little while to get going in their 2-0 win, and there were times when they looked to be creaking under the pressure of the Hornets’ attack. Part of the reason for that was a pretty sketchy display from Milner, who looked a little out of his depth covering at left-back for Andy Robertson. Of course, he has done exactly that before, but this time he looked as if he was genuinely struggling. There’s no doubting his work ethic, or his leaderships qualities, but when all is said and done, he has averaged just 0.5 interceptions and 0.2 clearances per game, as per Whoscored, and those are hardly the stats of natural defender. Clearly the club still believe that Milner has something to offer, but he needs to sort himself out if he is to keep on starting games on the regular.
