A number of Liverpool fans have called for veteran goalkeeper Andy Lonergan to start for the Reds in Monday’s Merseyside derby against Everton following Adrian’s performance in last night’s Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid.

With Liverpool 2-0 up and on course to reach the quarter-finals, the Spaniard sent a clearance straight to Joao Felix, who passed to Marcos Llorente as he crashed the ball into the home side’s net and sent Atletico on their way to a 3-2 victory. [via Sky Sports]

Liverpool’s goalkeeping options have been trimmed by the hip injury to regular first choice Alisson (through which he will miss the derby) and knee ligament damage incurred by Caoimhin Kelleher this week which looks set to end his season (as per Football Insider). Consequently, Adrian has started the last three games for the Reds, his error last night following on from a mistake in the recent FA Cup defeat at Chelsea, with Lonergan on the bench in each of those.

The 36-year-old has yet to feature competitively for Liverpool since joining the club last August on a short-term deal, with eight matches as an unused substitute the closest he has come to getting a game (as per TransferMarkt). Despite that inactivity, these Reds fans on Twitter think the veteran should start against Everton in the derby following Adrian’s erratic displays:
