Many Liverpool fans have voiced their disagreement with Paul Merson’s suggestion that the Reds should be looking to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

He made those claims in his blog for Sky Sports, with his words subsequently shared on Anfield Edition and a link posted on Twitter by @AnfieldEdition. Speaking about the Arsenal and Gabon striker, Merson said: “Liverpool do need a forward. Let’s be honest, they haven’t got a natural striker. Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino work really well together as a three, but you do need someone who can bang in 25 goals without a fuss.”

He added: “Firmino is a top player but he can go long periods of time without scoring. You still need someone who is a safety net in terms of goals and that’s what Aubameyang can provide.”

Aubameyang was the Premier League’s joint-top scorer last season along with Liverpool duo Salah and Mane (as per TransferMarkt) and has 17 in the league for the London-based club this season, with his 20-goal haul in all competitions the same as the Reds’ top scorer Salah. However, all three players could miss a sizeable chunk of next season if their respective countries qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations finals in January/February 2021.

The 30-year-old Gunners forward previously worked with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund and, last week, a report from 90min.com claimed that the Anfield club had identified him as a potential summer transfer target. However, these Reds fans on Twitter weren’t convinced by Merson’s recommendation to sign Aubameyang and made their feelings known:

Liverpool fans, what did you make of Merson’s advice to the Reds about possibly targeting Aubameyang? Would the Arsenal striker be a good addition at Anfield? Comment below with your views!
