With Premier League football currently on hold due to coronavirus concerns, plenty of Liverpool fans have instead been getting their fix of the sport by recalling a famous win over one of their main rivals six years ago today.
On 16 March 2014, Brendan Rodgers’ Reds went to Old Trafford and thrashed Manchester United 3-0 at a time when the home side were defending Premier League champions, with footage of the game’s highlights tweeted by @TheRedmenTV.
Two successful penalties from Steven Gerrard either side of half-time put Liverpool in a commanding position and the then-captain could even afford to miss his third spot kick of the afternoon shortly before a fine Luis Suarez solo goal completed the rout on a day when the visitors had seven shots on target to their opponents’ one. United’s misery was compounded by a 77th-minute red card for Nemanja Vidic, the fourth time the Serbian was sent off against the Merseysiders. [via BBC]
That win took the Reds close to then-league leaders Chelsea and was part of an 11-game winning sequence which had them in firm contention to win a first Premier League title, only for Manchester City to narrowly see them off in a battle that went to the final day.
These Liverpool fans on Twitter fondly looked back to what one Kopite called “the good days under Brendan Rodgers” six years ago and what remains the team’s most recent victory at Old Trafford:

What a day it was? Smashed our rivals into pieces… Stevie G could have done a record had he scored the other penalty which he missed??? Could have easily been 4 or 5 … Nevertheless, 0-3 at Old Trafford was great???
