Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson turns 26 today and, to mark the occasion, The Anfield Wrap on Twitter (@TheAnfieldWrap) shared a clip of his altercation with Lionel Messi in last year’s Champions League semi-finals.

In the opening minute of the second leg at Anfield, the Barcelona man was stopped in his tracks by the Scottish left-back and raised his arms as if to indicate that a free kick should have been awarded. Robertson reacted by pushing a seated Messi on the back of the head as if to let him know that Liverpool would not shirk in their mission to retrieve a 3-0 deficit – which of course they did with a legendary 4-0 win.
The Reds defender recently admitted in a Daily Mail interview that he regrets his conduct towards Messi that night and referred to the Argentina striker as “the best player in the world”. Tonight he and his team-mates face a similar if not quite as improbable a rescue mission as Liverpool seek to overturn a 1-0 first leg defeat against another La Liga outfit in Atletico Madrid.
On the occasion of Robertson’s 26th birthday, these Kopites fondly recalled his shove on “bottler” Messi in last May’s memorable European clash at Anfield:
He destroyed that bottler
