A number of Liverpool fans have voiced their disagreement with a claim by former Arsenal and England striker Alan Smith that the current postponement of football due to the coronavirus crisis would render a Premier League triumph for the Reds a “massive anti-climax”.

In his column for the Evening Standard, as shared by @AnfieldEdition on Twitter, the Sky Sports commentator wrote that, irrespective of what decision is taken regarding the remainder of the league season, any title triumph for runaway leaders Liverpool would be discoloured by an anti-climactic feel. It should be noted that he acknowledged Jurgen Klopp’s side as “the best team in the land by quite some distance”and also said that he felt a degree of sympathy for players like Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds currently have a 25-point lead at the summit and, if the league season resumes on 4 April as planned, they would be crowned champions with a win over Manchester City in their next match. Two wins from their remaining nine games would also be enough for Klopp’s team to become the first Liverpool side since 1990 to become champions of England.

Despite Smith’s praise of the Reds as a team, these Kopites on Twitter weren’t impressed with his claim that a Premier League title triumph would be chequered by anti-climax:

Liverpool fans, what did you make of Smith’s opinion on a possible title triumph being a “massive anti-climax”? Comment below with your views!
