As reported by The Times, all football matches in England are set to be played behind closed doors for the foreseeable future as the government prepares to implement plans to combat the spread of coronavirus – news that has not gone down well with a multitude of Liverpool fans.

According to The Times [via @LFCTransferRoom on Twitter], matches in the Premier League, Football League and lower divisions will be played without supporters in attendance, although the current season will not be postponed or cancelled. Season ticket holders and supporters with tickets for individual games will be able to stream coverage of matches into their homes.

A number of UEFA competition matches have already had behind-closed-doors orders implemented, including this week’s Champions League games in Valencia and Paris as well as tonight’s Europa League games involving Manchester United and Wolves. However, unlike in Italy, at least the domestic season will be allowed to continue.

Despite that, the government’s anti-coronavirus plans have been met with disgust from these Liverpool fans on Twitter, with their team likely to win their first league title in 30 years at an empty stadium as they hold a 25-point lead in the Premier League and need just two more wins to become champions, the announcement coming straight off the back of last night’s Champions League exit:

Liverpool fans, what do you make of the plans for football matches to be played behind closed doors for the time being? Is it the right decision or overly draconian? Join in the discussion by commenting below!
