A number of Liverpool fans have commended former England striker Wayne Rooney after he claimed that the Reds would be deserving Premier League champions if, as he feels it should, the season is completed.

In his weekly column for The Times [via Goal.com], the ex-Everton and Manchester United forward wrote: “Liverpool will win the Premier League. [They] have been fantastic. They have put so much work in. They deserve this title. Can you imagine waiting 30 years and then having it taken away like this? The right decision has been made.” His comments were later shared on Twitter by @LFCVine.

Liverpool lead the Premier League by 25 points and are close to landing a first league title since 1990 but the season is currently on hold due to the coronavirus crisis. However, at a meeting between the Premier League, FA and EFL last week, there seemed a strong determination to complete the remaining fixtures when the threat of COVID-19 subsides to an adequate degree to resume playing football (as per premierleague.com).

Croxteth native Rooney has frequently been a scourge of Liverpool in the past, scoring 13 goals in 26 games against the Reds, including winning goals at Anfield for Manchester United in 2005 and 2016, as well as a double in a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in 2012 and a contentious penalty equaliser for Everton in a 1-1 Anfield derby draw two seasons ago.

However, these Kopites on Twitter were full of praise for the 34-year-old Derby striker after his comments on Jurgen Klopp’s team:

Liverpool fans, what did you make of Rooney’s verdict on your team and the Premier League season? Let us know in the comments section below!
