Many Liverpool fans have not taken kindly to comments from former Reds winger Raheem Sterling in which he said that he still loves the club that he left in 2015.

As noted by the Daily Mail, the Manchester City and England attacker assumed control of the Instagram account for Colossal Sports Management, the agency with whom he is affiliated, for a Q&A session on Monday night and was asked if he would consider returning to Anfield later in his career. The 25-year-old replied: “Would I ever go back to Liverpool? To be honest with you I love Liverpool. Don’t get it twisted, they are always in my heart. It’s a team that done a lot for me growing up so…”. His response was subsequently posted on Twitter by @AnfieldEdition.

Sterling got his break in senior football with Liverpool back in 2012 and scored 23 times in 129 games for the Reds before a £49m move to the Etihad Stadium five years ago. Towards the end of his time at Anfield, he turned down a proposed £100,000-a-week deal (as per BBC), with his agent Aidy Ward later telling the London Evening Standard that his client wanted to leave the Reds. Sterling was condemned by former team-mate Steven Gerrard for declining to join Liverpool on their pre-season tour shortly before his transfer to Manchester City (as per BBC).

These Reds fans on Twitter, seemingly still scorned by the manner of Sterling’s departure from the club for their future title rivals, tore into the winger over his comments about his “love” for Liverpool, particularly after he recently told Sky Sports that Jurgen Klopp’s side should expect “a massive reaction” from Manchester City next season in an apparent swipe at his former employers:

Liverpool fans, what did you make of Sterling’s remarks about the club? Are you still angry about the way in which he left for Manchester City in 2015? Tell us what you think in the comments section below!
