Some Liverpool fans have expressed their opposition to a tweet from the club (via @LFC) stating that the use of flares, smoke bombs and pyrotechnics at Anfield is illegal and prohibited, with supporters warned not to bring such items into the stadium for tomorrow night’s Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.

The Reds stated on their official website liverpoolfc.com that any spectator who attempts to breach this rule could be subject to police arrest and added that the use of pyrotechnics could lead to the club being punished by UEFA with a fine and the potential abandonment of the match depending on the volume of smoke emitted. Celtic have been hit with multiple fines this season for letting off pyrotechnics during European fixtures (as per The Scotsman).

As noted by This Is Anfield, a number of Atletico supporters lit pyrotechnics to accompany their team’s bus prior to the first leg in Madrid three weeks ago, while some Liverpool fans did likewise prior to home Champions League games against Barcelona last season and Roma in 2018. In each case, the home side ended victorious following the frenzied pre-match atmosphere.

These Reds fans on Twitter didn’t agree with the club’s appeal for supporters not to use pyrotechnics ahead of, or during, the match against Atletico Madrid tomorrow:
