Former Premier League midfielder Michael Brown is confident that Liverpool will be able to secure the long-term future of Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Dutch midfielder’s current deal at Anfield is set to expire in 2021 and he has yet to be offered a new contract by the club. However, Football Insider claimed last week that securing a long-term contract for the 29-year-old is a priority for Jurgen Klopp, who has made his feelings known to the Anfield hierarchy, and talks are reportedly underway on a new deal.

Despite having little more than a year to prevent Wijnaldum from leaving on a free transfer, Brown has said that Liverpool do not need to panic and rush into negotiations and feels that the Dutchman would like to remain on Merseyside.

He told Football Insider: “Would you want a player of his ability to be on a longer contract? Possibly, with two years. You don’t really want anyone under two years, any of the players who have played regularly. Liverpool are in a great position, Wijnaldum will want to stay at Liverpool.

“The tides are turning for Liverpool in that they don’t have to rush it so much as they would have a few years ago. Players will want to be at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp so they’ll get the deal done when they’re ready.”

Brown is justified in his belief that Wijnaldum may wish to remain with Liverpool rather than jumping ship. Having won the Champions League last summer and lifted two more trophies since, as well as seeming on course to add the Premier League crown this year, the 29-year-old will realise that he is at a club which has won silverware and is quite likely to win more. In contrast, when he joined in 2016, the Reds had just finished eighth in the league and claimed only one trophy in the preceding 10 years.

Brown also make a valid point about players wanting to be part of Klopp’s squad at Liverpool. As noted by the Liverpool Echo, several first team regulars have penned contract extensions at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane, Joe Gomez, Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold all committing their long-term futures to the Reds.

Wijnaldum still has more than a year to pledge his renewed allegiance to Liverpool before his current deal expires and, as a consistently regular starter under Klopp, there should be a strong chance of him staying put, with the manager committed to the club until 2024. Therefore, Brown is right in saying that the Dutch midfielder could well stay at Anfield and there still ought to be time enough for player and club to close a deal which would satisfy all parties.
