Many Liverpool fans lapped up a tongue-in-cheek response from Virgil van Dijk to a question from former Reds defender Jamie Carragher on Twitter.

On Tuesday, the Dutch centre-back hosted a Q&A on his profile on the social media platform (@VirgilvDijk), eliciting more than 15,000 replies, one of which came from Carragher. The Sky Sports pundit asked Van Dijk on which ex-Liverpool defender does he model his game, seemingly trying to tee up the Dutchman to say his name. Instead, the 28-year-old gave the name of Carragher’s former team-mate Sami Hyypia.

Carragher and Hyypia were Liverpool’s centre-back partnership during their 2005 Champions League triumph and formed the backbone of a defence that conceded fewer than 30 Premier League goals for four successive Premier League seasons from 2005/06 to 2008/09. The Liverpudlian native made 737 appearances over 16 years in the Reds’ first team, the second-most of any player in the club’s history, while the Finland international played 464 times for the club during a decade-long spell and was hailed by another Liverpool legend in Ron Yeats as “one of the best bits of business we’ve done over the years” (as archived from liverpoolfc.com).

These Reds fans on Twitter enjoyed Van Dijk’s good-natured put-down of Carragher in favour of his former Anfield colleague:
