Plenty of Liverpool fans have been reacting to reports that former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso could return to the Premier League – but not as an employee at Anfield.

Goal.com reported this morning that the 38-year-old has been linked with the assistant manager’s job at Manchester City, where Pep Guardiola is seeking a successor to current Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta as his second in command. The story was subsequently shared on Twitter by @empireofthekop.

Alonso, who won the Champions League and FA Cup in a five-year spell at Liverpool in the 2000s, is currently in charge of Real Sociedad’s B team, with 12 wins from his 28 matches in the job so far. His team are currently fifth in Segunda Division B Group II, part of Spain’s third tier, and pushing for promotion.

The ex-Liverpool midfielder, who played under Guardiola at Bayern Munich, hailed his fellow Spaniard as “the best coach I’ve ever worked with” (as per Goal.com) and was recently endorsed by Arteta in a Q&A for Arsenal’s Twitter channel as someone who “will be a really good coach in the future”.

These Reds fans on Twitter hope that the reports of Alonso possibly taking a job at Manchester City prove unfulfilled, with one Kopite believing he should be hired by his former club:

Liverpool fans, would you be hurt or angry if Alonso were to become Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City? Share your views in the comments section below!
