A number of Liverpool fans have hit out at Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne after he called for the current Premier League season to be scrapped amid the coronavirus pandemic if it would affect the timing of the next campaign.

The Belgium international, whose wife and two children fell ill recently and are self-isolating at home, told the Liverpool Echo: “I would be sorry to stop early after such a good season, but if it avoids problems towards next year, it must be done.” His comments were later shared on Twitter via @AnfieldWatch.

De Bruyne’s club have won the last two Premier League titles but, as things stand, they look set to be supplanted by the Reds, who lead Manchester City by 25 points at the top of the table. However, if the season is abandoned and subsequently voided, Liverpool could be deprived of what had seemed a near-certain first league title since 1990.

The authorities on De Bruyne’s native Belgium yesterday proposed to end their top division as it stands and declare runaway leaders Club Brugge as champions (as per HLN), although UEFA have written to top-flight leagues in Europe asking them not to abandon their competitions. Premier League clubs will meet today to discuss a possible return date for the 2019/20 season.

These Liverpool fans on Twitter expressed their dissatisfaction with the 28-year-old’s comments:
