Plenty of Liverpool fans have expressed their delight at a statement from UEFA which appears to rule out any possibility of the 2019/20 Premier League season being declared null and void.

With football across Europe currently on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, Premier League clubs have been meeting to discuss how best to finish the season. As noted by talkSPORT, there is a strong determination to play the remaining fixtures but only when the government declares it safe to do so.

As per The Telegraph (and subsequently shared on Twitter by Liverpool fan @DaveOCKOP), UEFA yesterday released a statement insisting that domestic leagues across Europe would be settled on “sporting merit”, with results so far set to shape the final placings. That would most likely see a ‘points per game’ scenario adopted if the Premier League cannot resume, although the idea of play-offs to decide European qualification berths has also been mooted.

Either scenario would probably enable Liverpool to finish the season as champions, given that they have a 25-point lead at the top of the league and have claimed 82 points from 29 matches so far, an average of 2.83 points per game. These Reds fans on Twitter duly welcomed UEFA’s determination to draw upon previous results in 2019/20 to decide final placings rather than simply writing off the season:
