The mystery behind Georginio Wijnaldum’s contract is still not resolved, but a former Manchester City star believes that it could be decided in the next few months.

What’s been said?

The Dutchman’s future has been up in the air for some time now as it doesn’t look like it will be resolved any time soon, with his contract due to expire in the summer.

That being said, there is an increasing desire from the Anfield faithful for him to stay with us and extend his contract. For me, it seems bizarre that anyone would want him to leave after everything he has done for us.

Most notably, Wijnaldum was lauded as the superhero on Merseyside during our Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, replacing Andy Robertson at half-time to score two goals that helped us to an unforgettable 4-0 victory and helped on our way to glory in Madrid.

Speaking with Football Insider, Danny Mills believes that there is a good chance that Wijnaldum could leave Anfield this summer if his contract situation is not resolved.

“The deal has to be right for him,” he said. “In January he can sign a pre-contract and decide where he wants to go. I suspect that he might make his mind up then.

“The ball is firmly in his court. He is a player that will be wanted by an awful lot of people because of the great quality that he possesses and that he would bring to another club.

“If he does not get enough game time at Liverpool over the next few months someone is likely to get an exceptional player next season.”

L4L’s view…

I hate to say it but Mills is right. The longer we allow this to stagnate, the more likely that Wijnaldum will leave the club for free next summer.

This is not something that I want to see, and I’m sure that a lot of you reading this are in the same boat. The £36m-rated star has been a key asset for us over the years and has been a big part of our squad’s growth. Right from his first campaign in 2016/17 and the season after, Wijnaldum has been a pleasure to watch.

Here’s to hoping that he will renew his ties with us. Wijnaldum remains to be a pivotal part of our side and deserves to be included in campaigns on the horizon.
