Segments of the Anfield faithful took aim at Virgil van Dijk after his mistake cost us a goal during the first half of our opening Premier League game against Leeds United.

The Dutch colossus doesn’t often make mistakes. But unfortunately for him, the ones he is making are starting to become memorable for, of course, the wrong reasons.

Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher said on commentary during Sky Sports‘ coverage of the game that he was “arrogant”, as his touch fell straight into the path of the Whites’ Patrick Bamford who fired past the helpless Alisson.

There was already an element of frustration due to how Jack Harrison was allowed to drift inside and score for their first goal. But for some, it proved to be too much to cope with.

Some of the adjectives thrown at Van Dijk’s way were “shocking” and “abysmal”, while another stated that he makes “way too many mistakes”.

Whether you agree with these statements or not, it looks like there are fans who are becoming exasperated with his errors.

This supporter made an interesting point about Van Dijk’s arrogance during games. He had just scored minutes before and maybe the occasion had got to his head. One to think about perhaps going forward…
