Liverpool fans might’ve felt the world was against them when Joe Gomez suffered a knee tendon injury whilst away on international duty last November. 

Having lost Virgil van Dijk to a damaged ACL just weeks earlier, the Reds were down to the bare bones defensively almost from the outset of the season – compounded in January by Joel Matip’s ankle ligament issue.

Since the trio were all-but ruled out for the entirety of the campaign, Jurgen Klopp‘s side have been playing catch up and frankly, suffering.

Having used an unprecedented number of central defensive partnerships, in recent weeks the German has settled on Nat Phillips and deadline day signing Ozan Kabak – an unlikely duo at the start of the season to say the least.

As van Dijk and Gomez return to some form of training there have been glimmers of hope among Kopites they could feature again this season, albeit Klopp doesn’t believe that will be possible.
