Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo is out of action through injury at the moment, but a key update has emerged regarding which fixture he could return for.

The Dutchman joined the Reds during the January transfer window earlier this year, coming into a struggling team but still making an impression.

Perhaps most notably, Gakpo scored twice in the unforgettable 7-0 win at home to Manchester United last season, and he has proven to be a key man overall, netting 10 times in 34 appearances, and also chipping in with three assists.

The 24-year-old equalised for Liverpool in their eventual 2-1 defeat away to Tottenham last weekend, but unfortunately, he got injured just beforehand and then seemed to aggravate the issue further when scoring.

At the time, there were fears that Gakpo could be set for an extended spell on the sidelines, but according to The Athletic‘s James Pearce, he could be back for the visit of Everton in Merseyside derby on October 21st:

“A scan has since alleviated fears that he’s facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, but Gakpo is expected to miss Thursday’s Europa League clash with Union Saint-Gilloise at Anfield and Sunday’s Premier League trip to Brighton.

“If his recovery goes to plan, there’s hope that he will be available after the international break with Liverpool entertaining Everton on October 21.”

Our thoughts on Gakpo’s potential return date…

Given the pain Gakpo looked in when he got injured at Spurs, this has to be considered good news for Liverpool, meaning he could only miss the Europa League clash with Union Saint-Gilloise at Anfield, and the Premier League trip to Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

The Netherlands ace will be a miss in that time, due to his combination of quality on the ball and hard work off it, but it gives a chance to either Darwin Nunez or Diogo Jota to shine in the next two games.

The latter’s red card against Spurs means he is suspended for the Brighton match, making him highly likely to start Thursday’s encounter with Union SG, with the former possibly picked alongside Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz at the Amex Stadium this weekend.
