Liverpool reportedly sent scouts to watch Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz in action last weekend, with the Reds weighing up a possible move for him this summer.
The Merseysiders will have a new manager in place at the end of the season, once Jurgen Klopp departs as boss, and fresh players will likely arrive on the pitch.
Xabi Alonso appears to the current favourite to take charge at Anfield, with the former Liverpool hero doing an incredible job at Leverkusen in 2023/24 to date, guiding them to the top of the Bundesliga table.
Should the Spaniard become the Reds’ next manager in the summer, it could be that he wants some of his current players to follow him to Merseyside, and it looks as though certain indviduals are being eyed up.
According to a new update from HITC, Liverpool sent scouts to watch Wirtz and teammate Piero Hincapie in Leverkusen’s vital 3-0 win over Bayern Munich last Saturday, suggesting they could snap them up in the near future:
“HITC Football understands that, as Leverkusen stormed five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table with a thumping 3-0 win over the reigning champions, Xabi Alonso is not the only Bay Arena favourite with admirers on the red side of Stanley Park.

“HITC has been informed that scouts working on behalf of Liverpool were also in the stands to keep tabs on a number of players. Florian Wirtz, arguably the most exciting young attacking midfielder in Europe, is liked by Liverpool. As is Piero Hincapie. The talented, left-sided centre-half was a target last summer, as confirmed by his agent.”
Our thoughts on Liverpool signing Wirtz this summer…
Wirtz is one of German football’s most exciting talents at the moment, so Liverpool must do all they can to acquire his signature at the end of the campaign.
The 20-year-old is enjoying a fantastic season for Leverkusen, registering 13 goal contributions (five goals and eight assists) in the Bundesliga, and he has also chipped in with two and four in the Europa League respectively.
An attacking midfielder, Wirtz could give Liverpool extra magic in creative areas, with Alonso even comparing him to Lionel Messi in the recent past, which is the ultimate compliment.
A huge fee would admittedly be needed to snap the German ace up, but he could be an outstanding long-term signing, especially if Alonso comes in, too.
