Liverpool are willing to “submit” a big offer for Inter Milan and Italy midfielder Nicolo Barella this summer, according to a fresh transfer update.

Jurgen Klopp’s midfield rebuild last summer was essential, having toiled in that area throughout the 2022/23 season, with the likes of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson shadows of their former selves.

It has made all the difference for Liverpool, with Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch all shining to different extents, as the Reds look to win an unprecedented quadruple.

Despite there now being a plethora of strong midfield options to call upon, it looks as though the Merseysiders could again be targeting a top-quality addition in the middle of the park once this season comes to an end.

According to Il Secolo XIX [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are keen on signing Barella in the summer transfer window, with the report stating that the Reds and Manchester City are both willing to “submit” a sizeable offer for the 27-year-old.

The Italy international is contracted at Inter until the end of the 2025/26 campaign, so it would likely take a huge offer to be able to snap him up this year.

Our thoughts on Liverpool’s interest in Barella…

Barella has been a fantastic midfielder for some time now, showcasing his box-to-box ability for both club and country, registering 72 goal contributions (22 goals and 50 assists) for Inter and winning Euro 2020 with Italy.

He has all the tools to be a great success at Liverpool, coming in as a big-name signing for the next Reds manager after Klopp, whoever that ends up being.

That being said, Barella does appear to be relatively happy at Inter currently, having been there since 2020, and it could be argued that other areas of the pitch should be seen as a bigger priority at Anfield.

A new centre-back makes complete sense, for example, with Joel Matip expected to leave the club when his contract runs out this summer, and signing a player who can shine centrally and at left-back – Sporting CP hero Goncalo Inacio, for example – could solve two issues at once.

Should Liverpool manage to snap up Barella, however, it would be a superb piece of business, giving the Reds even more midfield quality and potentially filling the void left by Thiago, who will also surely depart alongside Matip.
