Borussia Dortmund attacker Donyell Malen is believed to be a “concrete” option for Liverpool in the summer transfer window, but there is strong competition for his signature.

Jurgen Klopp has assembled arguably the strongest attacking unit in the Reds’ history in recent years, with five superb players at his disposal.

In Mohamed Salah, Liverpool have one of the greatest footballers in the club’s history in their ranks, but Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo are all top-quality individuals in their own right, providing so much ammunition.

For that reason, there isn’t necessarily a massive need for the Reds to add further attacking depth to their squad this summer, but a fresh transfer update suggests they could are still looking for reinforcements in the final third.

Taking to X, Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg claimed that Liverpool are interested in signing Malen this summer, with some of their Premier League rivals also keen:

“News Malen: Been told that ManUtd is not seriously pushing for the 25 y/o winger at this stage! Arsenal, Liverpool and other clubs from the Premier League are more concrete options for him in the summer!

“Malen still wants to leave BVB in summer. Price valuation from all parties involved: €40-50m (£34.2-42.7m) all-in! 13 goals and 5 assists this season in all competitions. Contract valid until 2026.”

Our thoughts on Liverpool signing Malen this summer…

Malen is having an impressive season for Dortmund, scoring 11 goals in 19 Bundesliga starts, and he has 51 goal involvements (32 goals and 19 assists) in 106 appearances for the club overall. Before that, he also netted 55 times in 116 games for PSV Eindhoven.
The 28-cap and five-goal Netherlands international is capable of thriving on either flank, as well as in a central attacking role, so Liverpool’s next manager could see him as a great option when it comes to versatility.
It would be a surprise if any of the Reds’ current attackers left in the summer window, however – Cody Gakpo isn’t setting the world alight at the moment, but remains an excellent squad player – so bringing in Malen could make it hard to keep six different stars happy moving forward.
