According to Daily Mail journalist Kieran Gill, Liverpool still like Chelsea star Levi Colwill and Arne Slot is on the lookout for a left-footed centre-back.

Liverpool are gearing up for a busy summer as they prepare to introduce Jurgen Klopp’s successor Arne Slot on Saturday and there is no doubt the manager will want to get started straight away.

Most of the squad will either be competing at the Euros in Germany or will be in South America for Copa America in the initial weeks of Slot’s tenure at the Merseyside club, but that doesn’t mean that the former Feyenoord boss won’t be hard at work in their absence.

A strong and intentional start will be required from the Dutchman as supporters mourn the loss of their much-loved German manager and prepare for a future without him, something Slot can make better by going into the new season with a great first impression.

Great first impressions are earned and a confident summer transfer window with clear identification of the roles of that need reinvesting in will be a test of not only the manager’s understanding but of returnee Michael Edwards and new sporting director Richard Hughes.

The defensive set-up is the area that has lacked recent recruitment over the past few transfer windows, with midfield taking centre stage last summer and the attacking threat replenished in the summer before with the addition of Darwin Nunez, and just before him Luis Diaz.

Now it looks like Liverpool are keeping their interest alive in a transfer target that was named over last summer when Klopp and Jorg Schmadtke were in the driving seat for recruitment.

Daily Mail journalist Kieran Gill took to Twitter yesterday to reveal Liverpool’s continued admiration for Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill:

“Liverpool like Levi Colwill – Arne Slot is chasing a versatile left-footed defender – but Chelsea want 21-year-old academy graduate to stay this summer. Contracted until 2029 with option of a further year.”

Should Liverpool sign Levi Colwill?

There is no doubt that there is room for fresh perspectives in the centre-back roles next season, especially with Joel Matip leaving the club this summer.

Not only that, Virgil van Dijk has only 12 months left on his contract at present and at 32 year’s old wouldn’t be considered a prospect for the long-term future under Slot whether he earns a contract extension in the coming weeks or not.

The chasing of a left-footed defender is nothing new on the red side of Merseyside as last summer the club was inundated with links to many defenders possessing the profile, including Tottenham Hotspur star Micky van de Ven.

Cobham graduate Colwill has finally cemented himself as a starter at Chelsea over the past 12 months after being shipped out on loan several times, however, he does still find himself competing for the role in the centre-back partnership.

Over 23 Premier League appearances, the 21-year-old titan has scored one goal, tallied up an 83% pass completion rate and successfully completed 65% of his dribbles, as well as averaging five duels, 4.2 ball recoveries, 2.1 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 62.5 touches per game, as per SofaScore.

Considering the Blues have found themselves struggling again this season to get back to their best in the top flight, it seems unlikely that the club would be willing to part ways with one of their starting centre-backs.

With that being said, it will be interesting to see how this situation plays out and whether Chelsea would be tempted to sell one of their academy stars for pure profit.
