According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Liverpool are one of the clubs interested in signing Atalanta star Teun Koopmeiners this summer.

The Reds are gearing up for a busy summer ahead with Arne Slot set to officially become the new manager on June 1st and a new recruitment team in place tasked with providing continuity of success in the wake of Jurgen Klopp’s departure.

Former Bournemouth director of football Richard Hughes will be incoming to front the recruitment drive with the cooperation of Michael Edwards and Slot, as they navigate developing and reinvesting in the squad for Liverpool 2.0.

The Anfield faithful will be familiar with the way the club operates in terms of their recruitment and strict selling processes, which is unlikely to change despite Hughes and Slot coming in as Edwards was the innovator and orchestrator of the incredible talent acquisition over the majority of Klopp’s tenure.

As a result, it will come as no shock that the Liverpool hierarchy will be looking closely at their long-term and former transfer targets once again this summer and already it is looking like they have reignited their interest in one particularly admired player who has had an incredible season.

Popular Italian news outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport has revealed that Liverpool will compete with Juventus for the signing of Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners this summer.

As per the report, Juve are desperate to secure the signature of the Europa League winner but Liverpool are exploring the possibility of securing the Dutchman’s signature too.

Will Liverpool sign Teun Koopmeiners?

There is no doubt that Koopmeiners has been demonstrating his dominance in the centre of the pitch this season, but will Liverpool be inclined to add more midfielders to the squad this summer?

Last summer, the Reds added Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo to the midfield personnel and Klopp was tasked with keeping them all happy by rotating them into the squad.

Arguably, only Mac Allister has earned the right to expect to be in every starting eleven with Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott as the mainstays also competing with the newer midfielders for a spot in the team.

As a result, it seems unlikely that Liverpool will make it a priority to sign a midfielder over the coming weeks ahead of the new season, but it will be hard to ignore the value that Koopmeiners could bring to the team.

Over 33 Serie A appearances, the 26-year-old – who was labelled “elite” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig – has scored 12 goals, registered five assists and created nine big chances, as well as averaging 1.8 key passes, 4.4 ball recoveries, 1.2 tackles and 3.2 duels per game, displaying his diverse attacking and defensive qualities in the centre of the pitch.

With that being said, a move for Koopmeiners would definitely be one to watch this season as it would come as no surprise to see another Dutchman make the move to Merseyside, however, it will likely depend on the budget given to recruit and how much Atalanta will command in a transfer fee.
