Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is interested in signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez this summer, according to a fresh rumour.
The 27-year-old felt on the verge of potentially leaving Anfield this time last year, following a hugely disappointing 2022/23 season, in which both he and the team struggled.
Gomez has roared back into form over the past 12 months or so at Liverpool, however, producing a string of impressive performances and showcasing his versatility.
The Englishman was particularly eye-catching filling in for Andy Robertson at left-back this season, but he also did a solid job at right-back and centre-back.
Gomez ended up making a total of 51 appearances across all competitions for the Reds in 2023/24, with his displays earning him a place in England’s squad for Euro 2024, where his versatility could again be priceless for Gareth Southgate.
While the defender seems happy at Liverpool currently, and a new report from The Mirror claims that Kompany is keen on taking him to Bayern this summer, having replaced Thomas Tuchel as manager:
“Vincent Kompany wants to return to the Premier League and raid Liverpool for Joe Gomez. Kompany is eyeing up defensive reinforcements after taking over at Bayern Munich and likes Gomez’s versatility.”
The report does go on to add that “Liverpool will issue a firm hands off warning to Bayern” as they “do not want to lose one of their most-valued players”, however, suggesting there are no plans to sell him.
Our thoughts on Gomez’s Liverpool future…
Liverpool shouldn’t even be entertaining the idea of allowing Gomez to leave in the summer window, with the former Charlton Athletic youngster showing what a key squad player he is in recent times.
At 27, he could also be about to come into his peak years, and there is no reason why he cannot be an influential performer under Arne Slot for the next four or five seasons.
The one possible issue is that Gomez arguably won’t be a regular starter if everyone is fit, with the Reds dogged by injury problems in Jurgen Klopp’s final season, so a promise of more minutes at Bayern could turn his head.
That being said, Slot is sure to use him plenty, especially with Liverpool battling in four different competitions next season, and with his current deal not expiring until 2027, there is absolutely no rush to move him on.
