Liverpool are believed to be interested in signing Brentford attacker Bryan Mbeumo this summer, with the player himself “ready” to join the Reds.
Jurgen Klopp assembled a formidable attack at Anfield during the latter part of his reign, with Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo representing great options.
That being said, doubts have started to creep in with all five players of late, admittedly for very different reasons.
Salah turns 32 this summer and there are fears that he may have drifted past his absolute peak, while Diaz and Nunez have been criticised for their unreliable finishing.
Jota is a fantastic option when he is fit and firing, but injuries are proving to be a consistent issue, while Gakpo hasn’t set the world alight since arriving from PSV Eindhoven.
For those reasons, another attacker wouldn’t be a bad thing for new Liverpool manager Arne Slot in the summer transfer window, and it looks as though they are chasing a Premier League player.
According to L’Equipe [via Sport Witness], Mbeumo is an eyeing an exit from Brentford, with the Cameroonian reading to “shake up” the market.
Liverpool have “already expressed an interest” in signing the 24-year-old, but Newcastle United are in exactly the same position, as they look to boost their attacking options.
He is “ready to join a club the size of Liverpool”, as stated in the report, and the Brentford ace has said of his current situation:
“I have qualities that I’m not yet fully exploiting. When it comes to the final touch too, I need to be even more killer and decisive. I set up plans with a sports coach. I’m following a virtual reality program that allows me to improve my cognitive abilities. You have to be ready for the seasons to come.”
Our thoughts on Liverpool signing Mbeumo this summer…
Mbeumo could be a really strong signing by Liverpool ahead of next season, coming in as great competition in wide areas, not least for Salah.
The Brentford forward scored nine goals and registered six assists in the Premier League last season, coming from just 22 appearances, highlighting his consistency in the final third.
Mbeumo is still a relatively young player who should only get better, especially if he is plying his trade alongside superior players, so Liverpool should look to strike a deal for him.
Assuming Salah stays this summer, the Reds will still have to look at finding a long-term replacement, and considering Mbeumo often takes up a similarly right-sided role, he could be ideal, having proved himself in the Premier League already.
