A new report claims that Liverpool have opened contract talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold, but they have a replacement lined up if he does leave this summer.
Reds supporters will be dreading the thought of losing the 25-year-old at any point soon, with Real Madrid believed to have caught his eye.
Alexander-Arnold is one of the most creative full-backs of his generation, producing such world-class brilliance in a Liverpool shirt, and his unique talents would make him so difficult to replace.
The boyhood Reds supporter only has one year remaining on his current Anfield deal, which is raising understanding concern among the fanbase, but now an encouraging update has emerged.
According to Caught Offside, Liverpool and Alexander-Arnold are now in contact over the right-back signing an extension this summer, and “will offer the right-back-cum-midfielder a new contract until 2028/2029.”
The report also adds that “it’s believed that the initial feeling is that there will be an agreement on personal terms because the England international is prioritising staying at Anfield”, rather than moving to Madrid.
On top of that, it is claimed that Feyenoord right-back Lutsharel Geertruida is seen as a “target” for Liverpool, should Alexander-Arnold’s situation suddenly change.
Our thoughts on Alexander-Arnold signing a new deal at Liverpool…
Retaining Alexander-Arnold’s services feels as important as any new signing this summer, considering how many years he has left as an elite-level footballer.
Nailing Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah down to new deals is also vital, but they are 33 and 32 respectively, so they don’t represent the long-term future like their teammate does.
While the lure of Madrid is great for any player, given the ease at which they seem to rack up Champion League trophies, it would still be a huge shock if Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool for them in the current transfer window.
