Liverpool “continue to show interest” in completing the signing of Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer in the summer transfer window, according to a new report.
The centre of the Reds’ defence is arguably an area that needs reinforcements this summer, with Joel Matip departing after eight years at Anfield.
Granted, Liverpool did excellently with the Cameroonian available for most of last season through injury, but their options at centre-back do feel limited and flawed currently.
Virgil van Dijk remains a magnificent option, but Ibrahima Konate’s inability to stay for long periods is concerning, while Jarell Quansah is still a young player learning all the time.
Joe Gomez could be used in a central role by Arne Slot, should Liverpool’s new manager see him in that position, but either way, another new face is a must.
According to a fresh update from Tutto Juve [via Sport Witness], Bremer is still a target for the Reds ahead of the new Premier League season, having been linked with a move to Anfield this summer.
One report even claimed that Slot personally wants to bring the Brazilian to Liverpool, seeing him as an ideal option to bolster the defence.
That being said, Juve are digging their heels in, not wanting to lose an influential figure, so it may not be easy for the Merseysiders to get their man.
An offer of at least €70m (£59m) is believed to be needed to test the Serie A giants’ resolve, and it remains to be seen if Liverpool are willing to offer that amount.
Our thoughts on Bremer joining Liverpool this summer…
It is easy to see why Slot would want Bremer as a part of his defensive unit, with the 27-year-old a dominant performer who has proven himself at one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
Last season, the five-time capped Brazil international averaged four clearances and 2.8 aerial duel wins per game across 36 appearances in Serie A, and former international manager Tite once said of him:
“When he arrived here, in the games and the training sessions we did together, he gave such a sense of certainty. He really is a player of great quality.”
The amount that Juve are asking for is a lot, but if Slot and the likes of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes feel that he is worth it, they should be trusted.
