Liverpool remain “interested” in signing Lille centre-back Leny Yori in the current transfer window, according to a fresh update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The 18-year-old is widely seen as one of the most exciting young defenders in world football, having already become a hugely influential performer for his current club.
Last season, Yoro started 30 out of a possible 38 Ligue 1 matches, and despite his tenders years, he has already made 60 appearances for Lille in total.
There has been an understandable battle to sign the young Frenchman this summer, with Manchester United recently agreeing a deal with him, according to numerous reports.
Real Madrid have arguably stood out as the front-runners to snap him up, as they build a frighteningly talented squad, but Liverpool have also been named as contenders.
Speaking to Give Me Sport, Romano claimed that Yoro is still on the Reds’ radar, as they weigh up their centre-back options moving forward:
“For sure they are. They are considering several possibilities. For example, they’ve been interested for weeks for Leny Yoro, but they knew that Real Madrid were in control of the situation. This is why they didn’t send the proposal, but they spoke to the agents of the player.”
Our thoughts on Liverpool snapping up Yoro this summer…
It goes without saying that Yoro could be an outstanding signing by Liverpool if they managed to strike a deal for him, considering he could be a mainstay of their defence for the next decade, if not longer.
It is an area of the pitch that needs reinforcements, too, with Joel Matip’s exit meaning that Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah are the only options at Arne Slot’s disposal, unless he sees Joe Gomez in a central role.
Regardless of that, Yoro should be looked at as a primary target between now and the end of the summer window, as Liverpool look to find their eventual long-term successor to Van Dijk.
It does feel as though Liverpool are down the pecking order in the race to sign him, however, considering Madrid appeal to him and United have already seen an offer accepted, and he is expected to make a decision in the near future.
