According to Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool remain interested in signing Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.
Liverpool are now the only club in the entirety of the top five European leagues not to make a signing this summer, and Arne Slot will be under pressure in his first season on Merseyside to prove that a lack of work in the transfer market will be justified.
The exit of Jurgen Klopp shocked and saddened the Anfield faithful, but now the dust has settled and a new era has begun, there is hope that the former Feyenoord coach can emulate the German legend’s success and build on the legacy he left behind him.
Slot will have some of the most experienced and talented players in Europe at his disposal with Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson all Champions League and Premier League winners at the club.
Having this winning culture in the squad will only take the Dutchman so far though, and reinvestment will be essential to keep up with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, who have strengthened their squad this summer ahead of the new season starting next month.
As a result, it would be surprising to see Liverpool not do any business of any kind over the coming weeks before the summer transfer window closes, and yet again the Merseyside giants are being strongly linked with a man who is all too familiar with the famous city in the North West.
Italian journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano took to his YouTube channel to give more clarity on Liverpool’s interest in Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon:
“What I’m hearing is that the interest of Liverpool in Anthony Gordon remains a strong interest, remains a concrete interest.
“He is a player they really rate internally, a player they really like. And so the name of Anthony Gordon remains high on Liverpool’s list.
“Then we know that for this summer, they are looking at midfield, they are looking at the centre-back position also.
“So there are other things to do for Liverpool in the summer transfer window, they are considering to do these things, so we will see when and how and if Liverpool will decide to advance.”
Should Liverpool sign Anthony Gordon?
There is no doubt that Gordon was one of the stand-out performers in the Premier League last season, as he continues to prove he is one of the best up and coming English talents after making his £45m move from Everton to Tyneside 18 months ago.
The Liverpool-born winger had his consistency and tenacity in his wide forward role recognised by Gareth Southgate when he was selected to represent England for the first time at a major tournament this summer at Euro 2024, but unfortunately wasn’t given the game time many wanted to see him handed throughout the competition.
Over 35 Premier League appearances last season, the 23-year-old ace – dubbed “unbelievable” by his Newcastle teammate Bruno Guimaraes – scored 11 goals, registered ten assists and created a whopping 16 big chances, as well as averaging 1.6 key passes, 2.3 shots on goal, 3.6 ball recoveries, 1.5 successful dribbles and 5.3 total duels won per game, as per SofaScore.
These statistics provide a small insight into the winger’s diverse range of skills and capabilities, all of which would boost any top flight side and with Liverpool in need of improving their performances in front of goal, it would be a no-brainer to sign Gordon at any cost.
With that being said, Liverpool’s interest in Gordon will definitely be something to keep an eye on this summer and beyond, as he would be an incredible asset for the future of the forward line at Anfield.
