Liverpool could now reportedly decide to sell Joe Gomez this summer if an offer of around £40-45m comes along, according to a fresh claim.
The 27-year-old is now the Reds’ longest-serving player, having made the move north back in 2015 from Charlton Athletic, arriving before Jurgen Klopp had even taken charge.
Nine years later, Gomez remains an important squad player for Liverpool, overcoming numerous serious injuries and becoming such a versatile defensive option.
The England international has been linked with a move away from Anfield in the summer transfer window, with Aston Villa emerging as suitors, but recent claims have suggested that he wants to stay put.
A new development has now emerged, however, with Football Insider reporting that Liverpool could choose to accept a bid of around £40-45m, should it arrive.
The report does state that Gomez “is committed to the Reds as speculation rages over a potential move, but he could be sold before the 30 August deadline”, adding that the aforementioned offer would be “seriously considered”.
Our thoughts on Gomez leaving Liverpool…
With no defensive reinforcements arriving for Arne Slot this summer, selling Gomez makes no sense, especially as he can play at centre-back and in either full-back position.
He is now an extremely experienced figure, making 224 appearances for Liverpool, winning many trophies and being lauded by Klopp, who once said of him:
“If you play football at this level, there is a big difference between centre-half, full-back, right, left, to the No.6 – and he is capable of that transition in his mind. He is one of those stories. What a wonderful player he is and I am so happy he can show that again.”
Had a new defender arrived in recent months – one who was equally versatile – then there would be some sense in cashing in on Gomez if Slot doesn’t see him as a key man, but given the current situation, supporters would likely be frustrated if he was allowed to move on.
The Englishman seems to be happy with the current situation, so Liverpool would be wise to ignore any potential offers coming their way, reassessing his future next year, at which point he will have two years left on his current deal.
