Aston Villa “hold an interest” in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez this summer, according to a new update from journalist Jacob Tanswell.
Gomez’s Reds future has been a big talking point during the past few weeks, with the 27-year-old now the longest-serving player at Anfield.
He joined the club from Charlton Athletic as an exciting teenager back in 2015 and has gone on to win the Champions League, Premier League and many other trophies, proving to be an important squad member.
Injuries have prevented Gomez from having an even bigger impact in a Liverpool shirt, but he was excellent last season, filling in across various positions and making a total of 51 appearances in all competitions, which was only bettered by Darwin Nunez (54), Cody Gakpo (53) and Harvey Elliott (53).
The England international was left out of the Reds’ squad against Ipswich Town last weekend, however, leading to fresh doubts over his future, having been linked with a move away numerous times this summer.
Taking to X on Tuesday, The Athletic‘s Tanswell claimed that Aston Villa are in the mix to sign Gomez before the end of deadline day, joining Newcastle United in showing an interest:
“AVFC are among the clubs who hold an interest in Joe Gomez, though no deal is imminent with all parties exploring their options. A player who can play across multiple positions in the backline would be beneficial.”
Our thoughts on Gomez’s Liverpool future…
As discussed recently after another Gomez exit rumour emerged, it would be reckless for Liverpool to sanction the exit of the Englishman without having a replacement lined up this summer.
The Reds’ squad doesn’t feel brimming with depth currently, with not a single signing made in the summer transfer window, so there would be little sense in allowing one of their most versatile players to move on.
It is easy to see why the likes of Villa and Newcastle see Gomez as an exciting target, considering Jurgen Klopp once described him as “exceptional”, but the hope is that he stays put at Anfield unless the likes of Richard Hughes and Arne Slot have a top-quality replacement in mind.
