Liverpool are likely to sign another player on top of Martin Zubimendi this summer, according to a new claim from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Reds are being strongly linked with a move for Zubimendi this summer, with Richard Hughes and Arne Slot wanting a top-level No.6 brought in.

For all of Liverpool’s excellence last season, there were times when an elite defensive midfielder was sorely missed, even though Wataru Endo did an admirable job there.

In Zubimendi, the Merseysiders could be acquiring the services of an excellent footballer – one who impressed so much in Spain’s Euro 2024 final win over England last month.

The 25-year-old replaced the influential Rodri at half-time but ensured that the Manchester City wasn’t missed at all, performing with class in the middle of the park and completing 93.1% of his passes at the tournament.

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Romano claimed that Liverpool are likely to bring in “at least” one more new face as well as Zubimendi, assuming a deal for the Real Sociedad ace goes through:

“Liverpool have always been active for a new midfielder, and also something else. I don’t think it’s just a new midfielder. Midfield is a priority for Liverpool, they will do something, but also in other positions. I think at least one more, apart from the midfielder, for Liverpool.”

Our thoughts on Romano’s latest Liverpool claim…

This will be music to the ears of Liverpool supporters, considering it has been a quiet summer transfer window to date, with no players brought in.

Zubimendi would feel like a significant piece of the jigsaw filled, and it is then a case of potentially targeting a new centre-back and wide attacker, even though there is an element of depth there already.

Slot has four strong central defensive options currently, assuming he uses Joe Gomez there, but Ibrahima Konate is injury-prone and Jarell Quansah remains raw, so a signing in that position wouldn’t go amiss.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah is the only genuine right-sided attacking option for Liverpool, barring teenager Ben Doak, so snapping up a younger option who could potentially thrive on either flank would also make sense.
