Liverpool are planning to have a new “meeting” with Valencia goalkeeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili over a summer switch to Anfield, according to a fresh claim from journalist Fabrizio Romano.
While Arne Slot has made an exciting start to life as Reds head coach, winning four and drawing one of his five pre-season friendlies, this has also been a frustrating summer for the supporters.
Liverpool still haven’t made a single signing in the summer transfer window, and the fact that a move for Real Sociedad’s highly-rated midfielder Martin Zubimendi has fallen through is hugely disappointing.
It means Slot is now highly likely to head into the new Premier League season with no fresh faces, but the hope is that some reinforcements will come in between now and deadline day.
Taking on X on Tuesday, Romano claimed that Liverpool are continuing to pursue a move for Mamardashvili, with the Valencia ace happy to be loaned out if a transfer does go through, in order to keep playing regularly:
“One more meeting has already been scheduled for Liverpool to discuss Giorgi Mamardashvili deal with Valencia. Up to the Reds as he’d be loaned out and Georgian GK is keen on this solution.”
Meanwhile, in a brief social media update on Wednesday morning, Romano also said, “Mamardashvili and Liverpool, deal on”, suggesting that there could be further progress made in the near future.
Our thoughts on Liverpool signing Mamardashvili…
Mamardashvili is rightly thought of as arguably one of Europe’s best young ‘keepers currently, consisering he is already a key starter for club and country at the age of just 23.
At Euro 2024 earlier this summer, he was excellent for Georgia, making an incredible 30 saves across just four matches, proving to be an extremely influential performer.
In fact, that tally has only been bettered once in the history of the competition, behind Russia stopper Igor Akinfeev’s total of 32 at Euro 2008.
It is worth stressing that Alisson remains firmly Liverpool’s first-choice ‘keeper, which hopefully won’t change for some time yet, but future planning is essential and Mamardashvili could be an ideal eventual successor to the Brazilian between the sticks at Anfield.
