A new update has dropped regarding Liverpool’s potential transfer business in January – one that is in contrast to a recent claim.
Much was made of the Reds’ relatively quiet summer transfer window, during a period in which many supporters wanted to see significant additions come in.
Liverpool haven’t exactly broken the bank with new signings in recent years, so the hope was that Arne Slot would have plenty of fresh blood added to his squad.
Instead, only Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa were signed by the Merseysiders, and the former has remained on loan at Valencia for at least another season.
One recent report has stated that Liverpool are eyeing two new signings in January, with a midfielder and a left-sided centre-back at the top of their wishlist.
Now, a different update has emerged, however, as Football Insider state that the Reds “will not rush into their January business despite their frustration in the summer window.”
It goes on to add that the likes of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will now allow themselves to make “panic buys” in the middle of the season, instead only bringing in players who are ideal for Slot.
Our thoughts on Liverpool’s January transfer business…
There is a middle ground when it comes to this situation, with reckless spending something that has to be avoided, in terms of bringing in players who aren’t suited to Liverpool and are signed for the sake of it.
On the flip side, it would be so frustrating to see the Reds slip behind their rivals because of being too frugal in the market, at a time when a deep-lying midfielder in the mould of Martin Zubimendi is needed, even though Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister are excelling there currently.
Similarly, Virgil van Dijk’s workload needs to be eased, with the Liverpool captain now 33 years of age and needing to be handled sensibly, so it would be great to see players in both positions arrive in January.
Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, but if the Reds sign nobody in the next window and then suffer injuries that affect their Premier League and Champions League hopes, there will be understandable annoyance from many fans.
