A key update has dropped regarding the futures of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool, with FSG’s stance on the matter potentially changing.
The Reds were wonderful on Sunday afternoon, thumping Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford and continuing their 100% winning start to the Premier League season.
It was a day that saw so many different Liverpool players excel, whether it be Ibrahima Konate at the back, Ryan Gravenberch in midfield or Luis Diaz in attack.
Van Dijk and Salah, two genuine modern Anfield legends, were also among the pick of the performers, with their worth to the Reds still enormous.
Both are out of contract next summer, however, so it is only understandable that there is some concern when it comes to their Liverpool futures.
According to the Press Association, Hughes could now look to alter FSG’s stance regarding not offering players in their 30s new contracts, in order to keep hold of Salah and Van Dijk:
“With the transfer window now closed, the expectation is there will be some movement from Hughes, with a decision to be made on whether FSG depart from their policy of not offering lucrative, long-term deals to players over 30 in order to secure the futures of Salah and Van Dijk.”
Our thoughts on Liverpool giving Salah and Van Dijk new deals…
Sunday’s victory at Old Trafford showed how priceless Salah and Van Dijk remain for Liverpool, with the former bagging three goal contributions (two assists and one goal) and the latter leading superbly in defence, as he always does.
While they may now be 32 and 33 years of age respectively, there is no sign of them slowing down, and it feels as though they have another three or four years at the highest level in them.
For that reason, FSG must change their contract stance from the past, ensuring that two of the greatest Liverpool players of the last 30 years extend their stay at Anfield.
The same applies to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who at 25, is arguably even more important to tie down, and all three players must still be representing the Reds this time next year.
