A “sensational” Liverpool player is reportedly wanted by both Aston Villa and Newcastle United, as they look to take advantage of his lack of playing time.
The 27-year-old is now the Reds’ longest-serving player, having joined as a teenager from Charlton Athletic back in the summer of 2015.
At that point, Jurgen Klopp hadn’t even arrived as manager, but Gomez has gone on to enjoy a brilliant Liverpool career, winning the Champions League and Premier League, as well as many other trophies.
The Englishman has also been a priceless player when it comes to versatility, doing a good job at right-back and left-back, even though he is arguably at his most comfortable in a central defensive role.
Gomez hasn’t yet started for Liverpool this season, however, and according to Football Insider, both Villa and Newcastle are “keeping tabs” on him.
The Reds don’t appear to have any plans to sell the England international currently, but that’s not to say the player’s head won’t be turned by a move elsewhere, in order to be more of a regular.
Our thoughts on Gomez’s Liverpool future…
In fairness to Gomez, it is understandable why a Liverpool exit would appeal at this point in his career, given his lack of football since Arne Slot has come in.
He has so much quality, not to mention his aforementioned versatility, and Klopp once said of him back in 2020: “He is a sensational footballer, which is good. He has outstanding speed, which helps us a lot to keep our last line high; he is a really good challenger; good in one-on-one situations; football-wise, I said already, good.”
Ideally, Liverpool would keep hold of Gomez, considering he is such a great squad player, but at 27, he may feel that this isn’t the right point in his career to only be a fringe figure.
It is easy to envisage him thriving at either Villa or Newcastle, enhancing their respective hopes of finishing in the top four, should a January move materialise, but from a Reds perspective, a summer departure makes more sense if it has to happen.
Gomez’s contract doesn’t expire until 2027, though, so a big fee would be needed to prise him away, putting the Reds in a strong position.
