Liverpool are interested in replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold with a title-winning player if he leaves Anfield, according to a new update.

The future of Alexander-Arnold is a major talking point currently, with the Reds’ vice-captain out of contract at the end of this season.

The 25-year-old has hinted that Liverpool haven’t yet offered him an extension, much to the frustration of many, with Real Madrid potentially hovering to snap him up next summer.

Replacing Alexander-Arnold is bordering on impossible, given the elite quality he possesses from right-back – Dani Alves has described him as “world-class”, which is high praise – but a fantastic successor must be found if he does move on.

According to a new report from Football Insider, Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong will be “high on the list” for Liverpool, should their current hero leave Anfield.

The Dutchman is a “long-term target” for the Reds and “his stock has risen” after winning the Bundesliga title with Leverkusen last season, but they will be “just one of several top English clubs in the running for his signature if he decides to leave Germany.”

Our thoughts on Liverpool replacing Trent with Frimpong…

There is no denying that Frimpong is an excellent player, with the 23-year-old providing so much quality from his right wing-back role for Leverkusen, proving to be one of Xabi Alonso’s most influential players.

Last season, the seven-time capped Netherlands international scored nine goals and registered seven assists in the league, and he already has one apiece to his name this time around.

While Frimpong would likely be a great signing for Liverpool, giving Arne Slot bags of extra ability in his squad, it would be far more preferable to see Alexander-Arnold stay put.

In fact, retaining the services of the boyhood Reds supporter is arguably even more important than sorting the futures of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, given the fact that he is eight and seven years younger respectively.

The hope is that an agreement is reached sooner rather than later, with Liverpool offering Alexander-Arnold a deal that matches his ambition, but if the worst-case scenario happens and he leaves, Frimpong stands out as a great option to come in.
