Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing an England international in the January transfer window, even sending scouts to watch him in action.
According to a new report from TEAMtalk, the Reds have sent representatives to watch Angel Gomes for Lille, as his reputation continues to grow.
The 24-year-old recently earned a call-up to England’s squad for their UEFA Nations League clashes with the Republic of Ireland and Finland, impressing in a deep-lying midfield role.
His inclusion came as a surprise to many, but new interim manager Lee Carsley sees him as a player who could have a big future in the international arena, and he took his chance impressively.
Liverpool are interested in snapping Gomes up in January, being mentioned as one of three Premier League sides who have scouted him, with Arsenal also getting a mention.
The midfielder was once a Manchester United player, leaving Old Trafford back in 2020 after making just 10 appearances for them at senior level, which would give a move to Anfield an extra edge.
Our thoughts on Liverpool signing Gomes in January…
Liverpool’s failure to sign a central midfielder in the summer transfer window was frustrating, even though Arne Slot is still blessed with plenty of quality there, but Gomes could be an eye-catching addition in the January window, adding fresh depth in the middle of the season.
Granted, the Englishman was something of a forgotten man until his recent international call-up, but he showed what a talented player he is, displaying real quality on the ball and enjoying a 95.1% pass completion rate across his two international appearances.
Meanwhile, former Lille manager Paulo Fonseca has shown his appreciation for Gomes in the past, saying of him: “Angel is maybe the most intelligent player I have in my team. He understands faster than the others everything about the game; he loves the game. He loves to learn and he is a player with big skills, big technique.”
Ideally, Martin Zubimendi becoming available in January would still arguably be the best outcome for Liverpool, but if that doesn’t happen, which looks unlikely, Gomes would be a brilliant alternative.
