Liverpool are reportedly still in the mix to complete the signing of an “incredible” player who enjoyed title glory for his current club last season.
The Reds returned to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday, easing to a 3-0 victory at home to Bournemouth.
Luis Diaz kept up his impressive form with two goals in the first half before Darwin Nunez curled home a magnificent effort to complete the scoring before half-time.
Arne Slot has inherited a fantastic squad that is the envy of many managers across Europe, but a quiet summer transfer window was frustrating and players continue to be linked with moves to Liverpool.
One such figure is Bayer Leverkusen and Germany star Florian Wirtz, with Defensa Central reporting that the Reds are still keen on snapping him up.
The report does point out that Real Madrid are in pole position to acquire the 21-year-old’s signature, however, and Bayern Munich are also interested.
Our thoughts on Liverpool’s interest in Wirtz…
Wirtz is a player who would improve any team, given the attacking quality he has produced for Leverkusen in recent years, bagging 11 goals and assists apiece in the Bundesliga last season, en route to title glory. Meanwhile, former Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole has spoken of his admiration for the German ace, saying:
“Incredible. I’ve watched him three times this year now and he’s blown me away every time. He’s got a South American flair with a German efficiency about him. We’ve all heard of Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, and Musiala. This lad will be new to the British viewers. Let me tell you, he is every bit as talented as those players. He could go on to be anything.”
Admittedly, Liverpool don’t appear to be the front-runners for Wirtz, but if a chance arises to get him, they should do all they can to bring him in.
Capable of excelling as both a No.10 and out wide, the Leverkusen maestro would add so much class and depth to Slot’s squad, not to mention acting as a long-term acquisition with years ahead of him at the highest level.
