A huge update has dropped regarding the future of Mohamed Salah at Liverpool, with a report making it clear how the Reds ace views things.
The 32-year-old has to be considered one of the greatest players ever to grace the Anfield turf, being a remarkable signing ever since arriving in the summer of 2017.
Salah has now scored 214 goals in 352 appearances for Liverpool, putting him fifth on the all-time list, and injuries permitting, he has every chance of overtaking Billy Liddell’s tally of 228.
The Egyptian King may be flying at the start of this season, scoring and assisting three times apiece in the first three Premier League matches, but a cloud is hanging over him because of his contract situation.
Salah is out of contract at Anfield at the end of the current campaign and his comments after last Sunday’s 3-0 win at Manchester United claimed that nobody at Liverpool has spoken to him about an extension.
Now, a fresh claim from the Liverpool Echo has stated that the Reds legend is “desperate to extend his stay” on Merseyside beyond this summer, with his “determination to get closer to Ian Rush in the all-time scoring charts at Liverpool” acting as inspiration for staying put.
Not only that, but the report adds that “sources close to the player have told the ECHO how he and his family love Liverpool and have spoken about how settled they are in the North West”, with his daughter “one of the city’s people in his eyes.”
Our thoughts on this latest Salah update…
This is a hugely encouraging update when it comes to Salah extending his stay at Liverpool, in terms of him being happy at the club and not wanting to move away from the city.
As the report states, the “declining reputation” of Sadio Mane after his move to the Saudi Pro League could act as a warning to the Egyptian superstar, with the Senegalese simply never the same player after leaving the Reds.
At 32, Salah may not be getting any younger, but the way he looks after himself draws comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo, so there is no reason why can’t play at a high level until he is close to 40.
It is now time for FSG to rip up their approach of not wanting to give players in their 30s long-term deals, tieing Salah down to a new contract in the process, as well as Virgil van Dijk.
