Journalist James Pearce has dropped an important update on the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool, saying there is “zero chance” of one thing happening.

The Reds are in a precarious position when it comes to Alexander-Arnold currently, due to his contract expiring at the end of this season.

Real Madrid are thought to be hovering, seeing the 26-year-old as an ideal long-term replacement for Dani Carvajal, so the Reds are desperate for him to sign a new deal.

Speaking on The Athletic‘s ‘Walk On’ podcast, Pearce admitted that there is no great change in the current situation, but is certain that Alexander-Arnold won’t leave Liverpool in January:

“There’s absolutely zero chance that Trent [Alexander-Arnold] will go anywhere in January. I mean, I saw some nonsense yesterday about Real Madrid planning a bid for him in January or something. I just don’t believe that’s true. And I certainly don’t believe it for a minute. [It’s] absolute nonsense.

“I mean, we’ve said previously many times, every top club in Europe will be keeping a very close eye on developments over Trent’s future, because my information at the moment is that there is no decision that’s been taken. Those talks are ongoing.”

Our thoughts on Pearce’s latest Trent claim…

To see Alexander-Arnold depart in January would be an almighty shock for Liverpool, and there is surely next to no chance of that happening, as Pearce alludes to.

Losing him in the summer would feel equally grim, however, and supporters have every right to be fearful of one of the most talented creative players in the world leaving the club.

It would still arguably be a surprise if Alexander-Arnold didn’t extend his stay at his boyhood club, emulating his hero Steven Gerrard, who himself decided against a high-profile move to Chelsea during the 2000s.

The lure of Madrid is clear, not only due to their relentless pedigree in the Champions League but also because of the superstars in the squad, but Liverpool’s vice-captain can become an all-time great at Anfield, which should sway his thinking.
