There are concerns at Liverpool over the fitness of an “outstanding” Reds player currently, following a worrying update that has emerged.
So far this season, Arne Slot has been relatively fortunate in the injury department, certainly compared to Jurgen Klopp last term, with the German having so many key players out at different times, from Mohamed Salah to Diogo Jota.
Last Saturday, however, both Alisson and Alexis Mac Allister picked up issues in the 1-0 win away to Crystal Palace in the Premier League, acting as a big blow heading into the international break.
For the former, it is another fitness setback, with the Brazilian getting a reputation for being increasingly injury-prone, especially for a goalkeeper.
According to Football Insider, medics at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre are now finding Alisson’s injuries “concerning”, suggesting that there are doubts about him being able to consistently avoid them moving forward.
The 32-year-old has now missed 40 games in the past five seasons for the Reds, as the update points out, which is more than any other ‘keeper in the Premier League, highlighting his problems.
Our thoughts on Alisson’s fitness worries…
Alisson is now becoming a cause for concern when it comes to injuries, even though he has still been available for the vast majority of his time at Anfield since joining from Roma in the summer of 2018.
He seems to pick up muscle injuries too regularly, leading to Caoimhin Kelleher having to fill in, and if it keeps happening, Liverpool may have to weigh up his long-term future.
Alisson’s brilliance as a world-class player is indisputable, with Gary Neville once describing him as “outstanding” and the “best by a mile” in his position, but there is only so long that you can continue with an injury-plagued player.
At the moment, it isn’t a big enough issue for Liverpool to consider moving the Brazil international on, but should he be in and out of the team this season, they may have to consider bringing back Giorgi Mamardasvili from his loan spell at Valencia, having joined the Reds from the La Liga side during the summer transfer window.
