It has been confirmed that Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has left England duty for personal reasons and returned to Merseyside.

The 23-year-old recently earned a call-up to the Three Lions squad, with Lee Carsley bringing him in to make up for some injury absences.

Jones is still awaiting his senior international debut, however, having not featured in England’s surprise 2-1 defeat at home to Greece on Thursday evening.

Now, Liverpool have confirmed that the midfielder has returned home because of a “personal matter”, meaning he won’t travel to Finland with his teammates ahead of a UEFA Nations League clash on Sunday.

Our thoughts on Jones returning home…

It hasn’t been specified what the reason is for Jones’ departure, with his privacy important, and it remains to be seen if it will affect his availability for Liverpool’s Premier League visit of Chelsea on October 20th.

The hope is that he will be in the fold and that this personal issue is nothing too serious, with Carsley himself lauding the Reds ace’s ability in the past, saying:

“Similar to Cole (Palmer), I’m not surprised one bit (by his progress). Curtis would be up there with the most talented players I’ve worked with.

“He’s got everything that you need as a midfielder. He can run, he is very, very fast, he’s powerful, he can score, he can assist, he can defend, he can take the ball – all he needs is opportunity. The way he’s played when I’ve seen him play, he’s been outstanding. He just needed to stay fit.”

Granted, Jones has struggled to become a key player so far this season, with Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai the go-to options for Arne Slot, but he is still a vital squad player.

Injuries have stunted the midfielder’s growth at times, not allowing him long spells in the team, but the hope is that he has overcome those issues and is now ready to kick on further in his career.

At 23, he is still a young player, but he is now at the point where he needs to find another gear, reaching his potential in the process.
