An “important” Liverpool player is “close” to agreeing a new-and-improved contract, according to an update from journalist Paul Gorst.
There is so much focus on the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, but talks appear to be moving slowly at the moment.
That doesn’t mean that progress isn’t being made with other individuals, however, and an encouraging update has emerged regarding one Reds hero.
According to the Liverpool Echo‘s Gorst, Jarell Quansah is on the verge of signing an extension with Liverpool, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2027.
An improved contract is expected to come the young centre-back’s way – one that “reflects his status with the Reds” after becoming an important squad player.
Our thoughts on Quansah signing an extension at Liverpool…
This is fantastic news for Quansah and Liverpool, with the 21-year-old a player with such a big future ahead of him, having enjoyed a meteoric rise to date.
Since the start of last season, the defender has become an increasingly reliable member of the Reds’ squad, under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, and Alexis Mac Allister has heaped praise on him, saying:
“He was amazing. The job he did with Virg [Virgil van Dijk] is so important for the team because it gives us that calmness that we need to play football. Even on the ball he was amazing. Very happy and very glad for him.”
Handing Quansah an extension makes complete sense for all parties, with the centre-back a player with such a high ceiling, already making 35 appearances for Liverpool.
He will have to accept playing second fiddle to Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate for the time being, and while his substitution at Ipswich Town on the opening weekend of the Premier League season was a blow to him, he will hopefully learn from it.
Speaking of Konate, Gorst’s update also claims that the 25-year-old could also sign a new deal, and while negotiations aren’t as far along as Quansah, “there is a determination at the club to tie down the France international to a contract that will theoretically keep him at Anfield for the best years of his career.”
