Alan Shearer waxed lyrical about the brilliance of Mohamed Salah after Liverpool’s entertaining 2-2 draw away to Arsenal in the Premier League.
The Reds returned to Merseyside with a point on Sunday, ensuring that the Gunners remain four points adrift of them but admittedly allowing Manchester City to stay top of the table.
In truth, Liverpool’s overall performance was below-par, and they failed the make the most of some key absentees for Arsenal, especially when Gabriel went off injured in the second half.
It was Salah who came to the Reds’ rescue, finishing a lovely move to equalise late in the day, and speaking on Premier League Productions [via The Boot Room], Shearer hailed the Egyptian superstar, especially his quality for his goal:
“Mohamed Salah didn’t touch the ball a lot, he wasn’t as involved as he would like or want to be. But whilst he’s on the pitch, you’re always going to have that opportunity. Why would you take your best goal scorer off?,” Shearer said.
“His movement is just incredible. It was a great ball, and it was crying out to be put into the back of the net.”
Our thoughts on Salah’s impact at Arsenal…
It is so easy to take Salah for granted at times, but this is one of the greatest players in the history of the Premier League – one who is still performing in and around the peak of his powers.
The 32-year-old was quiet at times on Sunday, but when it came to the crunch moment, he was on hand to fire home the equaliser, following blistering movement to get into his goalscoring position in the first place.
Salah’s strike means he has not joined Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler on 163 Premier League goals, taking him ahead of Jermain Defoe and into joint-eighth place.
Thierry Henry (175) is now within his sights, and considering the Arsenal icon is seen by many as a true great of English football, it goes to show how special the Reds’ No.11 is.
Hopefully, this won’t be Salah’s final season in a Liverpool shirt, but if it is, supporters need to cherish every last second of a genuinely world-class footballer.
