Liverpool have reportedly sent scouts to watch Nantes centre-back Nathan Zeze in action, but numerous other Premier League clubs are also in the mix.

The Reds’ central defensive pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate is formidable currently, playing a big role in them sitting pretty in the Premier League, but that’s not to say that reinforcements don’t need to be looked at in that area of the pitch.

Van Dijk is now 33 years of age and hasn’t yet signed an extension on his deal that expires next summer, while Konate hasn’t been without injury problems down the years.

According to The Boot Room‘s Graeme Bailey, Liverpool are keen on signing Nantes ace Zeze, having sent scouts to monitor his progress at the Ligue 1 side.

Both the Reds and Chelsea have “both been in attendance to watch Zeze in the flesh in recent weeks”, while “Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Fulham have also scouted the towering 19-year-old since the new campaign got underway in August.”

Our thoughts on Liverpool signing Zeze from Nantes…

Centre-back has to be seen as one of Liverpool’s main areas of focus in the upcoming transfer windows, with options there feeling too light currently.

In Zeze, the Reds would be signing a 19-year-old with a huge amount of potential – football talent scout Jacek Kulig has called him “really impressive” – but also a player who has already become an important player for his club side.

He has started six games in Ligue 1 already this season, averaging an incredible 7.8 clearances per matches, as well as 2.7 tackles and two interceptions, highlighting the defensive quality in his locker.

Zeze could be looked at as a long-term heir to Van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s defence, initially coming in and learning from the Dutch legend, enjoying life as a squad player.

Should he continue to mature at his current rate, though, the hope would be that the teenager is ready for more of a starring role a few years down the line, at which point Van Dijk’s best days may well be behind him, assuming he is still at Anfield at that point.
